Losing a loved one is so hard. And knowing how to honour them in the right way is also difficult. At Kinetic Memorial, we will create a unique sculpture that works with the natural elements of the wind and truly honours your loved one. Run by Stuart and Louise Stockwell from their studio in Cheltenham, it's a small, hands-on operation where every sculpture is designed, built, and finished by hand with materials from the United Kingdom.
A COLLABORATIVE, CREATIVE AND GENTLE APPROACH
The idea of Kinetic Memorial came together during lockdown, when Stuart began building small kinetic pieces at home, largely as a way to keep
occupied. Louise, watching them move in the garden, suggested the designs lean further into natural forms rather than purely mechanical ones. A
visit to a local art show in Tewkesbury not long afterwards confirmed there was real interest in this kind of work, and Kinetic Memorial grew from
there.

Each piece is original and a genuine collaboration.
Stuart handles the mechanics: the internal structure, balance, and moving parts that determine how a sculpture behaves in the wind.
Louise handles the visual design: translating natural forms like leaves and branches into shapes that work with that mechanism rather than against it.
Designs go through several rounds between them before a piece is finalised, so the finished sculpture is functional and considered, not just decorative.

Every sculpture is wind-powered, with a mechanism designed so that the movement is irregular rather than repeating on a fixed cycle.
This is a deliberate design choice, not a limitation; it means the piece feels alive, responding to conditions rather than performing the same motion on a loop.
For many customers, that irregularity has particular meaning: it gives the piece a sense of presence, rather than it feeling like a static ornament or a machine going through the motions.
REAL PEOPLE LEAVING ANIMPRINT
Stuart and Louise live in the beautiful Gloucestershire town of Cheltenham, where they live with their seven-year-old Dachshund, Pickle. Alex their son is also a big part of Kinetic Memorial as he helps with the travelling and installation of any sculptures within a 100 mile radius.

Here's how Kinetic Memorial came about...
STUART
Before turning to sculpture, Stuart spent his career in electronics, working with LEDs, control systems, and asset management, where reliability and precision were critical.
Stuart's background matters because every kinetic sculpture depends on getting the engineering right:
Correct weight distribution, low-friction bearings, and materials that can stand outside in British weather for years without seizing up or wearing out.
Stuart is a passionate sculptor who also has the underlying discipline and technical understanding of why and how objects move. This comes directly from his earlier career. It's the reason these pieces are built to last and look beautiful.
LOUISE
Louise grew up enjoying hill walks around Cheltenham and has had an interest in gardening for most of her life which shows in her feel for natural form:
Leaf shapes, curves, and proportions that look right because they're drawn from things that actually grow.
Before Kinetic Memorial , Louise worked in retail and hospitality, where she developed a strong instinct for what people need when they're going through something difficult, and how to talk them through a decision that matters.
Louise now works with Stuart on design and dealing directly with customers, particularly those commissioning a memorial piece.
